XM Radio

XM General Questions
What is XM Radio?
XM Radio broadcasts over 170 digital channels of music, news, sports, talk and entertainment direct to cars and homes via satellite. The channels originate from XM's broadcast center, the world's largest all-digital studio complex in Washington, D.C., and uplink to XM's satellites. These satellites transmit the signal across the entire continental United States. Each satellite provides 18W of total power, making them the two most powerful commercial satellites ever built and provide coast-to-coast coverage. XM Radio is changing the way people listen to radio in the same way cable changed television.
What will I hear on XM?
XM turns your world on with commercial-free music channels from rock to jazz, country to classical, Latin pop to hip-hop, and virtually everything in between, all in amazing digital-quality sound. Turn on your favorite Sports with every Major League Baseball® game from Opening Day until the World Series®, NHL® Hockey, the PGA TOUR®, Indy Racing League® (IRL), American LeMans Series ® (ALMS) and college football and basketball. Plus, XM brings you the biggest names in news and talk, outrageous comedy, award-winning family programming — wherever you go from coast to coast. Exclusive live concerts, Oprah & Friends®, Radio Disney and so much more.
Does XM carry local stations?
XM Radio is revolutionizing radio by offering exciting and unprecedented coast-to-coast programming. XM’s listeners still have access to AM and FM stations for local content by hitting the band button on their radio and switching from XM to AM or FM.
Does XM have commercials?
XM offers 69 commercial-free music channels. However, many of the news, talk, sports and entertainment channels (including comedy and kids) carry a limited number of commercials.
Can I listen to XM anywhere other than in my car?
Yes. Your three trial months of XM (with new or pre-owned vehicle purchase) include unlimited access to XM Radio Online, letting you enjoy XM at home, at work — anywhere you have an Internet connection. You can hear more than 85 channels online, including 69 commercial-free music channels, plus comedy, talk and entertainment, and more. Just follow these simple instructions:
1.      Tune your XM Radio to Channel 0, and write down the eight-digit Radio ID.
2.      Visit xmradio.com.
3.      Click on “Listen Online Now” in the upper right hand corner and follow the instructions for “XM Satellite Radio Subscribers.”
B. GM Factory-Installed Questions
Are factory-installed XM units available?
XM is standard on more than 50 GM models for the 2009 model year. Many pre-owned GM vehicles also have factory-installed XM.
Why choose factory-installed over aftermarket units?
Having XM factory-installed makes it more user-friendly and easier to enjoy. You’ll experience seamless operation, with the antenna and wiring harness integrated into your vehicle’s sound system.
Is factory-installed XM Radio easy to use?
Yes! Just follow these easy instructions:
  1. Press the BAND/XM button.
  2. Turn the TUNE knob to scroll through the XM channels.
  3. Press the TUNE knob, “i” button, or “DISP” button to scroll through information like the artist’s name and the song title. To choose one of these options as your default, hold the button until it beeps.
  4. To preset a channel, press and hold the preset button until it beeps.
Will dealers be responsible for servicing the factory-installed XM option?
Yes. The factory-installed hardware option is a GM-validated part that is covered under the GM New Vehicle Limited Warranty. However, XM service is not included with the warranty.
Is there a sound-quality difference between a factory-installed unit and an aftermarket unit?
In most cases, yes. Many aftermarket solutions require that the XM signal be played through an FM modulator. As a result, some listeners may not experience the full digital-quality sound with these aftermarket units.
What if I am not in my car enough to listen to XM?
Your XM subscription and three trial months include unlimited access to XM Radio Online, letting you enjoy XM at home, at work — anywhere you have an Internet connection. You can listen to more than 85 channels online, including exclusive channels found only on XM Radio Online.
XM is not installed on my GM vehicle. What options do I have to add XM to my vehicle?
If you own a vehicle without factory-installed XM, you have two options:
1.      Dealer-installed XM, available on many GM vehicles. See a GM dealer for details.
2.      Purchase an aftermarket unit and have it professionally installed or install it yourself.
XM is not available on all trim levels, and availability on vehicles is subject to change.
Activation
I just bought a new GM vehicle, and my XM Radio is only showing a few channels. What do I do?
Your XM Radio needs to be refreshed. Go to refresh.xmradio.com and enter your Radio ID.
How do I locate my Radio ID?
With your vehicle radio on, press the BAND, AUX or XM button. Turn to channel 0 and write down the eight-digit Radio ID.
I purchased a used vehicle, but it is not GM Certified Used, how can I activate my XM Trial?
1.      Locate your XM Radio ID on Channel 0.
2.      Call 1.877.209.5079.
3.      Specify package name: GM Used Vehicle Trial “Three Months on XM.”
4.      Provide contact information to set up account.

I drive a company car equipped with XM. Am I eligible for the three trial months of XM?
Drivers of company cars equipped with XM are eligible for the three trial months if the vehicle was delivered by a GM dealership and if the vehicle is within its first three months of ownership by your company.
As a driver of a company car equipped with XM, can I still subscribe to XM?
Yes. Simply contact XM Listener Care at 1-800-929-2100 with your Radio ID to have a subscription started in your name. If you are already an XM subscriber, you can add this Radio ID to your account for as low as $6.99/month through the XM Family Plan option.
Also, your XM subscription can be transferred to another XM-equipped vehicle or cancelled at any time.
Programming
Is there a way to know in advance what some channels are playing, such as talk shows, musical formats, and special guests?
It’s easy – just go to xmradio.com and click on the “ON XM” tab. You will be able to click through the wide variety of programming offered by XM. You can also subscribe to the XM e-newsletter, XM Signal®, to receive programming highlights for the coming week, special offers and more.
Can I have certain channels blocked?
You may have certain channels blocked at no charge by going to http://www.xmradio.com/parentalcontrols or by calling XM Listener Care at 1.800.929.2100. Once a channel is blocked, you must call XM to unblock the channel. There are several channels that contain explicit language, including:
·         Channel 41 — Boneyard®
·         Channel 42 — XM Liquid Metal®
·         Channel 48 — Squizz
·         Channel 53 — Fungus®
·         Channel 65 — The Rhyme®
·         Channel 66 — Raw
·         Channel 150 — XM Comedy®

·         Channel 202 — Virus®
Will I be able to get updates of my local traffic and weather?
XM Instant Traffic & Weather channels offer in-depth, up-to-date information about road and weather conditions in 21 major metropolitan areas, coast to coast.
For a list of cities covered, please refer to the XM channel lineup. You can also get the latest information during natural disasters and weather emergencies on XM Emergency Alert (Channel 247).
Signal Coverage
Will I ever lose the XM satellite signal while driving?
XM has installed a repeater network in most major metropolitan areas that covers 95 percent of the U.S. population. These repeaters sit atop tall buildings and bridge the gap between the satellites and the receivers in case of obstacles. In addition, there is a four-second lag built into the system to allow for coverage when driving under an overpass or through dense trees.
Prolonged driving through a long tunnel or in a parking garage may sometimes cause a signal loss. In addition, some extremely mountainous regions have mixed signals. Stormy weather will not cause you to lose the signal because satellite radio operates on a frequency that is not interrupted during inclement weather.
Service, Pricing and Payment
Why should I pay for radio when I can get it for free?
You pay for radio reception for the same basic reasons that you pay for cable and satellite TV. XM delivers the clarity of digital-quality sound, the breadth of more channels and the convenience of having the radio signal stay with you wherever you go, coast to coast — with 69 commercial-free music channels too. Plus, XM has the programming variety that lets you customize every drive. Discover great new music or enjoy hearing the classics just the way you remember them — it’s how XM helps you make every moment yours. And it’s extremely affordable at just $12.95* a month.
You can also enjoy XM outside your vehicle with XM Radio Online. Listen at home, at the office — anywhere you have an Internet connection.
*Plus sales tax where applicable. Price subject to change.
What are XM Multi-year Service Packages?
Multi-year Service Packages give you a discount for purchasing two or more years of XM service at the point of sale. Plus, there are no monthly bills to deal with. There is no obligation with these packages. You may cancel at any time and receive a prorated monetary refund for any unused service.
Can I transfer my XM service to a new vehicle?
If you trade in an XM-equipped GM vehicle for another XM-equipped GM vehicle, the remaining service can be rolled into your new vehicle’s XM contract. Your dealer can take care of transferring the remaining balance to your new account when you purchase your new vehicle, or you can call XM Listener Care at 1.800.929.2100 to transfer the remaining balance to the new account.
Can I get a discount for XM on multiple units?
Yes. The XM Family Plan provides a discounted subscription price of $6.99/month* per radio for the second through fifth radios activated on the same account.
Subscribers who already own multiple XM Radios are eligible to switch to the program. Any combination of aftermarket and GM factory-installed radios are eligible.
To sign up for the XM Family Plan, contact XM Listener Care at 1.800.929.2100. Have your Radio ID handy.
